Some of you may have noticed a few more ‘holes’ appearing in the “New Comics This Week” Rack… there is no cause for alarm there- in most cases, those are the 1-copy-that-I-sell-of-that-book being sold. Lately, we have been trying VERY HARD to order exactly what we need of a lot of comics.
You see, once ordered, comics are generally here for good until sold. Now that New 52 Batman #1 was a good store purchase- we sold out. Three times!…. but easily 75% of the other books you see don’t sell out. Now back in the days of $1 comics, having 5-10 leftover for back issue stock was no big deal. But nowadays, that STACK of SHIELD comics cost the shop $20-$50, That Black Science #2 that didn’t sell like #1 (you guessed it) cost the shop (me!) another $10-20. See where this is going?…. We typically lose A LOT of money EVERY MONTH on books that look good on the shelf (I even pride myself on the selection especially of ‘smaller press’ that we offer) but just don’t sell well.
As of Jan 1st, we will be ordering a LOT LESS books ‘for-the-shelf.’ This means that it will become much more imperative that you UPDATE YOUR ‘PULL LIST’ regularly when you decide that you want to read a book. And it is much more likely to result in you getting that book in your box if you give us a 3-week-or-more notice. Why not take a moment to leaf thru a PREVIEWS catalog here in the shop next time you stop in for your comics? Or pick up a copy for home (PREVIEWS make the best Bathroom reader, ever!) – they are only $3.20 (that’s with your box discount applied!) or FREE if you keep 20+ books a month on your pull list!
Now, don’t worry TO much… I’m still gonna order and serve up a great selection of comics (especially #1’s- everybody loves #1’s!)… but now just tell us ASAP that you wanna read a #2 of a book (preferably by the next Monday after a book is released!) My ESP don’t always work and I can’t tell if you liked that book or not!
